Niu Lai Was the Joke. The Audience Made It an Event.

People bought tickets to witness China’s ‘worst animated film.’ Then the screenings became part prank, part group ritual, and part defence of something visibly made by human hands.

What happened

Niu Lai 牛来 is an 86-minute Chinese animated feature directed by Xin Yumeng and written with his mother, Sun Lifang. It opened nationally on August 5, 2026. In a pre-release interview with Dalian Children’s Radio, Xin described crossing over from landscape design, buying second-hand hardware, burning out computer motherboards under rendering loads and spending about five years finishing the film with his family at the centre of the process.

The result looks handmade because it is. Characters move stiffly. Models that would normally be polished away remain plainly visible. The film initially attracted almost no audience, then circulated online as an object of curiosity. According to box-office snapshots reported from Maoyan Professional, it passed RMB 12 million on August 17 and RMB 46.28 million by August 24. Those figures are dated checkpoints, not a final total.

The first viral audience arrived prepared to laugh at the film. What they found was a warm story about a calf, his mother and the patience required to stand up again. The production remained funny. The story did not agree to remain only funny.

What they’re saying

First, the internet bought a ticket to the joke

One Bilibili film commentator opened with the most practical survey:

A Bilibili post asking viewers who had paid to see Niu Lai, with ordinary account IDs blurred

“Hands up if you went to see Niu Lai. I want to know who has this kind of money.” — 3,117 likes · Beijing

A long reply supplied the biography that the film’s publicity had not. The original comment ran across two phone screens; here the screens and the complete translation are kept together as one piece of evidence:

One complete Bilibili comment summarising a radio interview with Niu Lai director Xin Yumeng, assembled from two consecutive screenshots with the account ID blurred

“According to information compiled from a Dalian Children’s Radio interview with Niu Lai director Xin Yumeng: Yumeng came from an ordinary family, studied landscape design and believed he had a talent for directing. He wanted to make an animated film of his own, with his mother’s unconditional support. After buying second-hand equipment on Xianyu, mother and son began making the film at home in their spare time. Their poor hardware burned out several times. Yumeng, who had never studied animation, handled the images; his mother, who had never studied scoring or screenwriting, handled sound and story. Five years later, it reached cinemas. Production began in 2021, the Year of the Ox, and Yumeng’s father was also born under the Ox, so they chose the auspicious name Niu Lai. Yumeng said: whether it makes money or not, make it real first.” — 2,341 likes · Anhui

“This is one of the very few pieces of real information anywhere online.” — 935 likes

“Key detail: Dalian Children’s Radio.” — 478 likes

The comment was based on a real radio interview, although several details around the film continued to mutate as they travelled. A reply called it one of the few pieces of actual information online.

Then came the argument that the film was 劣币驱逐良币 liè bì qū zhú liáng bì — literally “bad money drives out good.” The phrase is commonly extended beyond currency to mean cheap or inferior products crowding better ones out of a market. Here, “good money” meant the supposedly good professional films. The reply turned that label back into a quality test:

A Bilibili comment answering claims that Niu Lai was driving good films from the market, with usernames blurred

“If Niu Lai can drive your film out, how good could that film possibly have been?” — 722 likes · Beijing

“Hell money is driving out the bad money.” — 110 likes

“At this point, it is hell money driving out the bad.” — 89 likes

冥币 míng bì — paper money burned as an offering to the dead; “hell money” in English. The joke now has three ranks: 良币 is good cinema, 劣币 is bad cinema, and 冥币 places Niu Lai comically below even the bad films it is displacing. The replies do not defend its craft. They ask why the professional films get to call themselves “good” before surviving the comparison.

Another commenter supplied the human version of the production story:

A long Bilibili comment describing a mother helping her adult son finish an unlikely animated film, with the username blurred

“The director and his mother’s story is moving too. He was in his thirties, unmarried, his business was struggling, and for a time he was badly depressed. When his mother saw him like this, she sat down to make an animated film with him by hand, as she had once made crafts with him as a child, and encouraged him to weather the storms and stand up like the calf in the story. A woman in her sixties accompanied a man in his thirties in pursuit of a dream that looked absurd and childish. It is ugly and funny, but perhaps this is the most sincere love between parent and child.” — 4,270 likes · Shandong

The theatre reports began arriving too:

A Bilibili comment reporting that an entire Tianjin cinema laughed through Niu Lai, with the username blurred

“I actually saw it. Watching in a Tianjin cinema was wonderful: the whole room laughed, and people were still laughing together in the lift afterwards. There aren’t many comedies that keep a room laughing from beginning to end.” — 743 likes · Tianjin

The cinemas joined the production team

There was no standard campaign supplying every cinema with glossy display material. Staff began making their own.

A Bilibili comment showing a handwritten cinema notice for Niu Lai and replies saying each cinema made its own promotional material, with usernames blurred

“Are all the posters this unhinged?” — 333 likes · Jiangsu

“The wildest part is that every cinema has a different poster. The cinema staff made them by hand. The distributor didn’t give them one.” — 476 likes

“What publicity campaign? Cinema employees made all of this themselves.” — 222 likes

CONTEXT · 抽象 chōu xiàng still means “abstract” in ordinary Chinese. Online, it has widened into a reaction to something so illogical, bizarre or off-the-rails that normal interpretation fails — often with the added pleasure that the failure is funny. RESOU translates the effect, not the dictionary headword: unhinged, wild, off-the-rails or pure absurdity, depending on the sentence.

Even the box-office milestone became material for puns:

A Bilibili comment celebrating Niu Lai passing twelve million yuan at the box office, with the username blurred

“This is no longer bad money driving out good — it is hell money driving out the bad. Niu Lai, Niu Lai: did the bull market arrive today? Ru Lai! — 393 likes · Shandong

The sound chain keeps opening the title. 牛市 niú shì is a bull market; 如来 rú lái, rhyming with Niu Lai, is the Chinese Buddhist title for the Tathāgata — commonly, the Buddha. The comment lowers the film and celebrates it in the same breath, then recruits the Buddha simply because the rhyme still has room.

The freedom to call the film bad became part of its charm:

A Bilibili comment saying Niu Lai is the only bad film the commenter can criticise freely, with usernames blurred

“Some films are obviously terrible, but I don’t dare say so because strange people will send me pages of abuse. But with Niu Lai, I can finally say it freely: what an absolutely terrible film.” — 357 likes · Guangdong

“No paid defenders, no publicity machine, no fan army. Call it bad as loudly as you like.” — 84 likes

One reply tried to make Niu Lai a proxy war against the industry and accidentally used the wrong idiom:

A Bilibili comment saying people were criticising the film industry through Niu Lai, plus a correction to the idiom, with usernames blurred

“On the surface everyone is attacking Niu Lai. Aren’t they really attacking the rotten people in the film industry? Calling a deer a horse, that’s all.” — 53 likes · Guangdong

“I think you mean pointing at the mulberry tree to curse the locust tree.” — 18 likes

CONTEXT · 指鹿为马 zhǐ lù wéi mǎ, “point at a deer and call it a horse,” is about power deliberately renaming an obvious fact and making others accept the lie. 指桑骂槐 zhǐ sāng mà huái, “point at the mulberry and curse the locust tree,” is about attacking one target through another. Here people are not pretending Niu Lai is something it is not; they are using the film to attack the industry. The reply corrects the mechanism, not merely the animal.

Then brands, pirates and remixers arrived

A public homework-app account joined with a corporate sequel pitch:

The verified Xiaoyuan Search homework-app account proposing its own Ape Arrives poster, with ordinary reply IDs blurred

“Xiaoyuan Search: Let me work hard and I’ll make one too. Effort brings rewards — just like studying.” — public brand account

Its homemade poster changes , ox, to , ape: 猿来 yuán lái, “Ape Arrives,” a brand-name remake of Niu Lai.

The account name remains visible because this was a public brand speaking as a brand, not an ordinary viewer being placed on display.

Douyin comments showing a homemade Niu Lai cinema poster and a seat map for a late-night screening, with ordinary account IDs blurred

“Let me show you our cinema’s Niu Lai poster.” — 2,222 likes · Liaoning

The next screenshot supplied the seat map — and the collection’s clearest dissenting voice:

A Douyin comment showing a Niu Lai seat map arranged to spell 牛B, followed by a viewer saying it is painful to see audiences reward the film while serious filmmakers struggle, with the account ID blurred

“These are the seats for Niu Lai at our cinema.” — 1,129 likes · Zhejiang

CONTEXT · The booked seats spell 牛B niú bī · niu bi, a common softened spelling of 牛逼: “awesome,” “badass” or “damn impressive.” The first character also echoes the in Niu Lai, so the booking chart becomes both a compliment and another title pun.

“Sorry, I can’t laugh. I just feel for everyone trying to make a film properly. One ticket from each person, and now he wants to make a sequel.” — 1,358 likes · Jiangsu

This is the collection’s clearest dissenting voice. It is also an ordinary viewer’s voice, not an institutional verdict. The concern is not that the mother and son were allowed to make a film. It is that curiosity can become a reward system of its own.

The piracy discussion became almost tender:

Douyin comments joking that nobody was policing recordings or even pirating Niu Lai, with usernames blurred

The film then acquired a Peppa Pig-style remake made in ten days:

爆肝 10 天,手搓小猪佩奇风格速通爆火动画《牛来》。 “Ten days of sleep deprivation: a handmade Peppa-style speedrun of the viral animation Niu Lai.”

The top review was six characters long:

比原版精致。 “More polished than the original.” — 8,808 likes · United States

“Agreed.” — 345 likes · Jiangsu

“I was dying. Three little ‘Demon Orbs’ were sitting behind me, imitating Niu Lai’s voice over and over.”

魔丸 mó wán — “Demon Orb,” the supernatural label attached to the child Ne Zha; here it is a joking name for three noisy children in the cinema.

Other viewers remembered children behind them imitating the calf’s voice, and one did the arithmetic:

三分钟的故事,导演凭一己之力变成了 86 分钟。 “A three-minute story, expanded by the director’s own strength into 86 minutes.” — 885 likes · Sichuan

The joke refused to stay a joke

The largest post in this collection did not come from a critic. It came from a viewer who had spent half an hour crying.

A Xiaohongshu post saying the audience laughed through Niu Lai before crying at the mother's sacrifice and then laughing through the tears, with the account ID blurred

“I nearly stopped breathing. Everyone laughed through the first half; the atmosphere was wonderful. My face hurt from laughing, and so did my stomach. Who could hold it together against that thunderous modelling and those plain, off-the-rails lines and voices? It had a natural, unvarnished comic effect. The cinema was almost full, which made it even harder not to laugh. Just when I thought I would keep laughing, the story became more and more painful — not pain inserted for its own sake, but something carefully prepared and built step by step. When Mother Cow sacrificed herself for Niu Lai, I started crying. Then that thunderous modelling made me laugh through my tears, and I could not stop that either.” — 84.9K likes · 9,462 saves · 16.9K comments

The top reply gave the film a single ideal viewer:

Xiaohongshu comments praising the viewer who cried and describing morality fighting with the sense of humour, with usernames blurred

Niu Lai found someone who truly understood it. That alone made its whole life worthwhile.” — 100K+ likes · Beijing

“HAHAHAHAHA.” — 9,504 likes · Zhejiang

“The visuals are so unhinged that my conscience and my sense of humour keep fighting each other.” — 2,118 likes · Guangdong

That second line is the centre of the story. It does not ask the viewer to pretend the animation is technically good. It asks what to do when technical failure and emotional sincerity occupy the same frame.

Other viewers began defending what the mockery had missed:

Xiaohongshu comments defending Niu Lai's dream structure and supporting the original poster, with usernames blurred

“Using an upright cow and a crawling cow to distinguish the dream world was such an interesting idea. The tree where he made a promise with his mother was still standing inside the dream.” — 7,502 likes · Beijing

“I really like the film’s structure and concept. It is a shame so many people dismissed all of it without seeing it.” — 2,858 likes · Beijing

“They are all attacking you, but I found you. I am also someone willing to say loudly that Niu Lai is good and I like it.” — 184 likes · Hebei

One viewer translated the film’s roughness back into the patience of the mother who helped make it:

A Xiaohongshu reply connecting the ending song lyric with director Xin Yumeng's name, with usernames blurred

“The ending song made me cry. Mother Cow was eaten by wolves while protecting Niu Lai. Whatever else one says about the film, I wish more mothers in real life had her patience: encouraging a child to stand up one step at a time, not tearing the child down, respecting what they love and their decision to persist. That kind of maternal love — respecting a child and staying beside them while they keep going — is extraordinarily precious.” — 272 likes · Hubei

“The ending song says: ‘When will the rain grow light and the wind gentle? When will the new shoot break the soil?’ The director’s name is Xin Yumeng — rain, sprouting. His mother is so gentle.” — 213 likes · Shaanxi

The lyric does not contain a perfect character-for-character acrostic. It does something softer: , rain, and 萌芽, a sprout beginning to grow, echo the sound and meaning carried by 雨萌.

Finally, the posters became folk art

In Wuhan, a hand-drawn cow stood beside a polished Spider-Man display:

A Wuhan cinema video showing a hand-drawn Niu Lai poster beside a polished Spider-Man poster, with the account ID blurred

“This is what the poster looks like in Wuhan.” — 70.2K likes · 3,037 comments

The live comments supplied their own running labels:

连钱都没有吗/极简主义/手机都掉了/还是个手绘/我不行了/极简就是极繁/笑疯了 “They do not even have money for a poster?” / “Minimalism.” / “Even the phone dropped.” / “And it is hand-drawn.” / “I can’t.” / “Minimalism is maximalism.” / “I’m losing it.”

Another cinema wrote its own consumer warning:

A Douyin comment showing a handmade cinema poster that calls Niu Lai pure absurdity and offers no refunds, with usernames blurred

“This film has zero substance. Pure absurdity. No refunds or exchanges.”

“They didn’t want to pay for printing and accidentally developed a distinctive artistic vision.” — 3,866 likes · Zhejiang

The clearest surviving photograph turns the cinema foyer into a dictionary citation:

A cinema's hand-drawn Niu Lai poster reading working beasts watch Niu Lai and happiness comes immediately, with the account watermark blurred

“The beasts of burden come to see Niu Lai. Happiness comes right away.”

牛马 niú mǎ, “human beasts of burden” — workers describing themselves as the animals pulling the cart. The second half, 马上来, means “coming immediately,” but literally puts the arrival on a horse. A cinema employee got the ox, the horse, the audience and the film title into two handwritten lines in a public foyer. That is enough evidence to send 牛马 to the RESOU dictionary queue.

What I see

The easy version of this story is that an ugly homemade film embarrassed a polished industry. The comments do make that argument. It is not the most interesting thing they did.

The harder version begins in the cinema. People entered with the safety of irony: the ticket bought permission to laugh. Then the story asked them to recognise a mother who stayed beside her adult child while he tried to stand up. The animation did not improve while they watched. Their relationship to it did.

That is why the dissenting comment belongs here too. Curiosity can reward poor craft; viewers trying to support careful filmmaking are allowed to feel the distortion. But the 84,900-like post is not asking anyone to lower a technical standard. It records a more embarrassing fact: sincerity reached the room before polish did.

Two people made the film. Everyone else made it an event.

Sources and limits

  • Xin Yumeng’s August 1 interview with Dalian Children’s Radio confirms the August 5 release, his landscape-design background, the roughly five-year production and the second-hand hardware failures. The interview has been republished in several places; RESOU used the dated programme description and transcript excerpts, not anonymous production-cost claims.
  • The RMB 12 million figure is a Maoyan Professional snapshot reported on August 17; RMB 46.28 million is a separate Maoyan snapshot reported on August 24. Neither is presented as the film’s final gross.
  • Claims such as “no publicity,” “no legal department” and the cinemas independently drawing every poster are presented where they belong: as audience comments supported by the screenshots, not as independently audited company facts.
  • This collection contains five viral posts across Bilibili, Douyin and Xiaohongshu. It is a deliberately selected archive of the replies visible in the supplied screenshots, not a representative survey of every viewer.
