POV: sleepy on a plane but refusing to miss the meal” — 1.33M likes · 7,385 comments · 32K saves · 94K shares · September 2026

Airplane Mode. Appetite On.

A sleeping passenger put his dinner order on a screen. The comment section said the meal cart was alarm enough.

What happened

A young man is asleep in an economy seat on Air China: sleep mask on, grey neck pillow in, head tipped to one side. On his lap, propped against his chest, a tablet is showing one word in giant red letters, scrolling slowly across the screen so that only Chicke fits at any one moment. He has put his dinner order where the crew can read it, and gone to sleep.

A young man asleep on a plane in a black sleep mask and grey neck pillow, a tablet on his lap showing the word Chicken in huge red letters, cut off at Chicke

pov:当我坐飞机犯困但不想错过飞机餐时 “POV: sleepy on a plane but refusing to miss the meal”

1.33 million likes and 7,385 comments. Douyin’s search bar, which watches what people look up while they scroll, pinned its own contribution to the top of the thread: 大家都在搜:chicken是什么意思 “Everyone is searching: what does chicken mean”. That line became the second joke of the thread, and we will get to it.

The first joke is that nobody in the comments thought this was strange. They thought it was them.

What they’re saying

The thread opens in character:

Top of the comment section: a comment playing the flight attendant greeting Mr Chicken, a reply asking whether planes really skip sleeping passengers, and two replies about stickers and being asked what you want after waking

Flight attendant be like: “Hello, Mr. Chicken. You dozed off just now, so you missed the meal~” — 75K likes, Zhejiang

“Wait, they don’t serve you if you’re asleep? Every flight I’ve taken, the attendants wake the sleepers up and finish handing out the meals.” — 16K likes, Shanxi

Not so much anymore. Usually they put a sticker on you, and if you want the meal you trade the sticker for it with the crew.” — 3,707 likes, Guangdong

上次没叫我起来,但是看我起来后问我吃啥,真是有心了,然后好像吃淮山还是椰子鸡,真的挺好吃的😄 “Last time they didn’t wake me, but the moment I sat up they asked what I wanted — very thoughtful. I think it was the yam-and-coconut chicken. Genuinely delicious 😄” — 99 likes, Guangdong

CONTEXT · Chinese airlines often leave a sticker on passengers who sleep through meal service: wake up, show the sticker, get your meal. 淮山椰子鸡, huáishān yēzi jī — a Cantonese chicken soup with Chinese yam and coconut; a comfort dish, not something you expect at 30,000 feet.

Then someone looked at the screen again:

A comment saying the word is cut off and the full text is chicken allergy, followed by a comment with a screenshot saying the attendant stood beside him squinting for ages before deciding

其实没显示完,完整的是chicken allergy “It’s actually cut off. The full text is chicken allergy.” — 132K likes, Shanghai

The attendant stood there squinting at it for ages, then finally decided: yep, that’s the one 🤣” — 88K likes, Henan

Two replies: one saying they hadn't noticed until it was pointed out, another saying so rigorous

I hadn’t even noticed until you said it” — 5,173 likes, Jilin

So rigorous 🤣” — 887 likes, Guangdong

This one is about the attendant too. The word on the tablet is scrolling, so she has to wait for it to come round.

The top comment saying the attendant is so thorough she waited for the whole word to scroll past before slowly setting down one chicken rice, and a reply pointing at the reflection where she hesitated

The attendant is so thorough 😭 She waited for the whole word to scroll past before slowly setting down one chicken rice.” — 514K likes, Beijing

Look at the reflection — the attendant hesitated for a second HAHAHAHAHA” — 6,400 likes, Beijing

From here the thread stops reviewing the video and starts comparing methods. The tablet, it turns out, is only one school of thought.

A comment recommending folding the tray table down and striking a waiting pose, a reply saying she still has to ask what you want, the original commenter saying they usually get shouted awake, and someone asking why their flights make them put the tray up

Honestly you don’t even need that. Fold the tray table down, strike a ‘waiting for food’ pose, and keep sleeping 🐺” — 4,636 likes, Zhejiang

She still has to ask what you want” — 328 likes, Zhejiang

Usually when they see me in position they just shout me awake haha” — 245 likes, Zhejiang

The flights I take always make me put the tray table back UP. Is this a cheap-ticket thing 🙄🙄🙄” — 47 likes, Tianjin

I just asked for an extra one. Shame it was all chicken 🫣🫣🫣” — the comment below

Then the confessions start. The first one is a whole short story:

A long comment about sleeping so deeply on a Weihai to Harbin flight that the crew checked whether the passenger was still breathing, and a comment with a grinning cat meme saying the cart only needs to come within ten paces

Woke up to find a sticky note on the seat in front: ‘If hungry, call the attendant for food.’ The guy next to me said they’d tried for ages — shouting, shaking, nothing — and eventually called a crew member over to check whether I was still breathing 😊” — 358 likes, Guangdong

No need for any of that. If the cart comes within ten paces of me, I awaken on my own.” — 2,282 likes, Shanxi. Attached: a cat, grinning with every tooth.

That comment became a flag, and people gathered under it:

Replies under the ten-paces comment: someone whose tray table is already down when they hear the cart, a reply calling them a Commander-in-Chef, and someone who wakes up from the smell alone

Same 😂😂 Dead tired, but the second I hear the cart getting ready, my tray table is already down 🫡🫡” — 77 likes, Shanghai

You’re a Commander-in-Chef too” — 12 likes, Anhui

Same. Even asleep I can smell it 🤣 and wake up automatically” — 1 like, Australia

饭统, fàntǒng — sounds exactly like 饭桶 “rice bucket”, a bottomless eater, but spelled with the 统 of 总统 “president”: a head of state, for eating.

One commenter took the attendant’s side, and the attendant’s voice:

A comment in the voice of a flight attendant apologising that there is no chicken today, only beef and pork, so they will skip him for now

🤭I’m sorry啊 今天没有chicken,只有beef和pork 就先不给你发啦🤭🤭🤭 ”🤭 I’m sorry ah, no chicken today, only beef and pork — so we’ll skip you for now 🤭🤭🤭” — 213 likes, Tibet

CONTEXT · The half-English sentence is an impression of TVB, Hong Kong’s TV network, whose Cantonese dramas made “I’m sorry 啊” and mid-sentence English a cadence everyone in China can imitate. The attendant is being played as a TVB character.

And in the middle of all this, somebody who had never flown raised a hand:

A comment from someone who has never flown asking whether the meal is hot and whether you can ask for two, followed by three patient replies explaining how meal service works

Never been on a plane — is the meal hot? And if one isn’t enough, can I ask for two 🥺” — 627 likes, Shandong

And if you’re still hungry you can ask for another 😲 Once they’ve served the whole cabin, whatever’s left is up for grabs — just tell the attendant when they come round. There are snacks after the meal too.” — 223 likes, Guangxi

Okay, thank you all 🥹” — 8 likes, Shandong

On short flights that don’t hit mealtime you get bread or something, plus a drink, and refills are fine. Extra meals depend on leftovers — supposedly on small planes, the last two rows can see what’s left and go wild on seconds and thirds” — 46 likes, Jiangsu

Nobody laughed at the question. Three strangers wrote a manual. This is the part of the thread we would put on the fridge.

A comment saying that however you sleep, one whiff wakes you early

In reality: however you sleep, one whiff and you’re up early 🐱🧱” — 2,762 likes, Jiangsu

A comment with a photo of a full airline meal tray saying everyone gets woken up, eats whether hungry or not, and chews in perfect sync; a reply saying the crew just needs to confirm passengers are alive; another saying they have missed it several times and the attendant brings one at the end

Get woken up, eat whatever they hand you whether you’re hungry or not, and then the whole cabin chews in perfect sync” — 57K likes, Nigeria

Truth is, the attendants know everyone’s asleep and tired. They just need to confirm the passengers are still alive 🤗” — 14K likes, Jiangxi

Not me — I’ve missed it several times 😭😭 Usually the attendant brings me one at the end” — 4,309 likes, Hainan

Now, the search bar. Douyin had noticed that thousands of viewers were looking up the word on the screen, and said so at the top of the thread. The thread found this very reassuring:

A comment saying meet my gaokao rivals, with a screenshot of the Everyone is searching what does chicken mean bar; a reply saying even without being able to spell it they would know it was chicken; another reply saying no, that is a zhongkao rival

Meet my gaokao rivals” — 1,974 likes, Yunnan

Even if I genuinely couldn’t spell the word, the moment it appeared in front of me I’d know: that’s chicken 😊” — 227 likes, Jiangsu

Nope. That’s a zhongkao rival.” — 49 likes, Guangxi

CONTEXT · The screenshot is Douyin’s own search bar, which shows what viewers of a video are looking up. Under this one it read 大家都在搜:chicken是什么意思 “Everyone is searching: what does chicken mean” — a word every child in China learns in primary-school English class. Hence “meet my gaokao rivals”: the gāokǎo is the one-shot national college exam, and if the people you are competing against cannot read “chicken”, you have already won. It is a small, happy gloat. The reply lowers the bar once more: 中考, zhōngkǎo, is the high-school entrance exam, one rung below.

The attendant gets one more scene, and it is the best acting in the thread:

A comment written as the flight attendant sounding out the word letter by letter, with a meme of a squinting man

空姐:C。。。吃。。。 。。chick。。。噢 Flight attendant be like: “C… chew… chew-chew… chick… ohh.” — 2,575 likes, Australia. Attached: a man squinting so hard his whole face has folded.

In the original she gets stuck on chī, which is how the first syllable of “chicken” sounds in Chinese — and also the word 吃, “to eat”. She is reading the order and accidentally saying “eat, eat”.

A comment saying who else gets my sense of humour, with a crop of the tablet showing the letters hicke

Who else gets my sense of humor 😂👌” — 19K likes, Henan

A comment about airplane meals having a kind of magic that wakes you up and puts you back to sleep, with replies about a built-in food radar across four connections, needing double portions, and cabin CO2 plus blood sugar

我感觉飞机餐是有一种魔力在的,我睡得再香,只要开始放饭我都能醒过来,然后吃完又能秒昏睡回去😂 “I swear airplane meals have a kind of magic. However deep I’m sleeping, the moment they start serving I wake up — and the second I finish, I pass out again 😂” — 1,417 likes, Jiangsu

“Same 😊 Built-in food radar. Never missed a single airplane meal. Personal best: four connections, every one in a different time zone, didn’t miss one meal 😊 — and slept the rest of the way.” — 128 likes, Anhui

I need double portions or it doesn’t count” — 11 likes, Guangdong

Cabin air is stuffy, lots of CO2, then the post-meal blood-sugar spike 🤣” — 1 like, South Africa

A comment with a photo of a meal tray and a can of cola, saying they wake up right before the meal and fall asleep after, and a comment about not daring to ask for anything on a first flight for fear of being charged

Every time: wide awake right before the meal — not sleepy, not tired — then straight back to sleep after 🐷” — 1,196 likes, Shanxi

My first flight I didn’t dare ask for anything — I thought they’d charge me 😭 Such a loss 🤣” — 1,214 likes, Guangxi

And the last four, which are less jokes than a small chorus:

A comment saying what manner of thing is this, with a crop of the tablet showing the letters hick

。。。 “What manner of thing is this…” — 1,953 likes, Henan

A comment about a return flight that served two meals, and a friend revealing the outbound flight had two as well but nobody woke them

I was thrilled and asked my friend why the outbound only had one. He said the outbound had two as well — they just didn’t wake me 😅” — 16 likes, Beijing

A comment titled Eyes Open Before Every Meal Service, with a photo of an orange cat smiling with its eyes closed

《每次发餐前自动睁眼》 Eyes Open Before Every Meal Service — 6,879 likes, Sichuan. The 《 》 brackets are reserved in Chinese for book titles and formal works — and here they have been placed, with full ceremony, around an involuntary reflex. The joke is the packaging. The still is an orange cat, smiling, eyes shut.

A comment suggesting a different sign for next time in case there is no chicken, with a photo of a person holding a cardboard sign reading Hungry

Try this next time, in case there’s no chicken 🥱” — 2,318 likes, Guangdong. Attached: someone by a roadside holding a cardboard sign that says HUNGRY.

What I see

There is something comforting about discovering how little consciousness is required for lunch.

The tablet is clever, but the comments make it feel almost overengineered. Apparently the mind can clock out while the appetite stays on shift, listening for the quiet machinery of meal service.

What I like here is the absence of a verdict. Nobody needs to be corrected, and nobody needs to win. They are simply recognizing the same ridiculous bit of human wiring in one another.

Put dinner at the end of an aisle, and a row of strangers becomes sleepy sunflowers.

Editorial cartoon: three passengers asleep in eye masks and neck pillows, forks already in hand, lean as one toward a meal cart while a flight attendant lifts a cloche and the steam drifts into their noses

Eyes closed. Radar on.
